On November 10, 1775, two battalions of Continental Marines were formed in Philadelphia during the American Revolution to serve as a branch of troops capable of fighting on land or at sea. The Marine Corps joined the Department of the Navy in 1834 and has been instrumental in some of the most iconic battles in American history.
